Lo: To understand the differences between public service and commercial institutions 

Public service broadcasting - PSB means that programmes are made for the public. No ads for example the BBC. They generally transmit programming that aims to improve society by informing viewers. They also strive to entertain their audience.

Try to reflect the diversity of Britain, distinctive original content and try to inform us. it also tries to differentiate itself from any American TV that is shown in Britain.

75% of the BBC's funding is from TV licences. £147 for a colour TV and £49.50 for a black and white licence. The remaining 25% comes from commercial activities such as worldwide sales of its programmes, publications such as the radio times and Good Food.

The BBC are also limited on how much politics they cover as they can't be seen to be biased as they are government owned.

Remit - What will the station promise to deliver.

The BBC is more educational and informative than the likes of ITV due to the BBC remit.

The BBC remit is to inform educate and entertain.

The BBC is not allowed to advertise on any of their TV shows to the point labels are taken off products shown in programmes.

The BBC is a cross media organisations and is one of the largest in Europe. This means it is vertically and horizontally integrated.

Commercial institutions - With ads for example ITV or Sky.

Time Shifting - when you watch a TV show but schedule it an hour later for example ITV +1.

Vertical Integration - In which a media company has the ability to control production, distribution and exchange (consumption) of the product. Good because you take all of the profits. Bad because all funding will come from yourself. For example Blumhouse.

Horizontal Integration - In which a media company has a number of subsidiary companies that are used to support the marketing of its products. Good because costs are spread out between each company. Bad because profits are shared. For example Disney. 

Synergy - Companies that are both vertically and horizontally integrated are able to create synergy across their output. This means they are able to promote their output. For example, Doctor Who - in an efficient and profitable manner, whilst at the same time creating a recognisable brand.

    You might want to include some examples of 'subsidiary companies' along the horizontal integration axis (i.e. what are the different media platforms that run along it?).
