film advertising

Conglomerate - One overall parent company that owns a number of smaller, subsidiary companies.
  • An example would be Frozen.
A conglomerate has complete control over the production process. (Disney are an example of Vertical integration because they own everything and don't need outside help.

Joint venture - is when one media company works for another on a project mutually beneficial for both parties.
  • An example would be Get Out who needed universals financial backing to distribute the film.

Above the line advertising is advertising to everyone in an obvious way for example billboards.
Below the line advertising is advertising discreetly for example through product placement.

Working Title productions
Working Title is a British film and television production company owned by Universal Pictures. The company was founded by Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in 1983.

Universal Pictures is an American film studio owned by Comcast through the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group division of its wholly owned subsidiary NBCUniversal.

Working title have worked on other productions such as newly released Yesterday. This film went straight to the box office and has turned a profit by around 5 times its budget.

In terms of other major films produced in the last 5 years by Working title, there are films such as Baby driver, Les miserables, The Johnny English films, Ali G, Nanny McPhee and thunderbirds along with countless other big hit films.

Some failures of Working title include; The making of Grimsby, Theres something about Romcoms and Get lucky.

In terms of Universal some of their biggest films over the past 5 years include; Jurassic world, Despicable me and the minions movies and all of the fast and furious movies.

Explain two disadvantages of being an independent company. Use examples to support your answer. (6 Marks)

One disadvantage of being an independent company is that they don't have the capabilities to make high budget films. This is a disadvantage because it would make it harder for the film to be successful as if there is less money to spend then typically it will end up being of a lower quality. One way a company got around this was Blumhouse studios who, when making Get Out, had the majority of their scenes in 3-5 areas which therefore kept the budget down in that sense which meant they then had more money to use for example by improving the quality of post production.

Another disadvantage of this is that it makes it harder to distribute the movies. This is because they have less of a following or presence. This is a disadvantage because it can end up being more costly for the production company to get the film out there and generate attention. One way small companies get around this is by finding conglomerate companies to back the films financially. One example of this is when small production company, Working title worked with conglomerates Universal in order to help distribute their film 'Worlds end'. This therefore made the film gain more attention because Universal were able to use their high stature and popularity to draw consumers attention towards the film, something Working Title perhaps couldn't have done on their own.

  1. Well done Ben, a really nicely answered exam question. Just be mindful that it is only 6 marks, so you won't need this amount. You do repeat yourself at points, so that won't be necessary and would cut out words.
